What is an API?

It stands for “Application Programming Interface” which allows 2 softwares to communicate with each other. By enabling the API functionality in your Exchange account, you will be given a set of keys possibly looks like this:

API Key: abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRST
Secret Key: Ksk7Q1ZXq2FHoU91tUsKeQRTo2c7Po1FaZXq2FTo2cs

Then you can put them into your connection settings, your bot will be able to trade on your behalf.

Please be aware different Exchanges might have different ways to acquire API keys and it could take a while to be effective after key generation, here are the links to some specific Exchanges
